Even Superheroes Need Help Sometimes!

And the superhero in this scenario is YOU!

We all want to be a superhero to our kids. We are the cook, taxi driver, event coordinator, education facilitator, and chief bather and bottle washer, among many other things. And just like in the comic books and movies, sometimes the superhero fails. Sometimes they need help.

Thinking you can do it all by yourself is a trap.

Don’t fall into it. There are always places to get help. Family. Friends. Community. And the library.

Finding a mentor to help you in your quest to be the best parent you can be, means that you are willing to grow and learn… just like you want your kids to be able to do.

I was several years into homeschooling and felt like I was really rocking it. My three older boys were getting it and loved learning. My fourth, not so much. He was not happy and was doing his best to make the rest of us not happy with him.

I needed some help. Something needed to change.

I reached out and took advantage of the different opportunities available to me in my community. I asked for support from my family and got a couple of friends to join me on this new adventure.

It ended up changing my life and my family’s.

I look back on that time, and it would have been so easy for me to label my son as a “difficult” child and think that I just needed to discipline him more to make him do what I wanted him to do. A few years before, that is precisely what I would have done.

But I had read a book that shared ideas that made me look at my kids differently. Discipline and structure were necessary, but so was allowing my kids to learn in the best way for them.

And I had listened to a speaker talk about different homeschool philosophies.

And I read another book about focusing more on positive reinforcement rather than negative consequences.

I was still the expert on my child. I was just a better one because I had reached out to get help from others.

I only have my fifth son left at home, and he just started high school. I’ve been doing this mom thing for over 25 years. And I still need help.

My superhero powers are composed of all the family, friends, mentors, and resources out there that I have been able to take advantage of, and as long as I keep looking for them, they keep coming.
