Do You Have Fish in Trees?

I had a great time in Texas last week!  I got to meet so many new people at the Great Homeschool Convention in Round Rock, Texas, and visit my three older boys who live in Austin.  An added bonus was that they got to see what their crazy mom does!  They even helped me set up my booth.  Such a blessing.

At every conference I go to, I hand out small posters with my favorite quote:

Everybody is a genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.

Einstein

In my “Realizing Your Homeschool Genius” presentation, I shared how this quote changed my life.  Decades ago, I stalked a poor unsuspecting girl wearing a shirt with this quote at a homeschool conference (I didn’t have a phone with a camera), so I could write it down.

I realized that I was doing this whole education thing wrong.  I wasn’t looking at my child’s genius and working from that.  Instead, I was getting caught up in the curriculum and standards.

My fish were climbing trees.

Over the years, I’ve worked to individualize education for all my students.  Sometimes it is just a gentle tweak, and other times it is a total redo of how they are learning.

Would you like to learn more about how I do this?  I shared all my resources from my presentation on my Summer Special page.  You don’t need to have attended to take advantage of them.

Would you like help to get your fish out of the trees?
